TEFL teaching materials

teaching professional people english

Sometimes it’s fun to have a really good debate in class – you know, the sort where people throw caution to the winds and expound at length on subjects about which they know next to nothing.  It’s not something I would go in for all the time, but once at least in a course with a group I do like to get them thoroughly wound up – to student sit-in levels if at all possible.

Today’s video is perfect for getting the ball rolling.  It has a long-haired intellectual (at least in the abstract sense) with lots of ideas, and a forthright manner about him.  I should warn you up front that this is NOT for use in schools, unless you want parents complaining about phrases like ‘cutting the balls off capitalism’ – but it’s brilliant for adults.

From a curriculum point of view, this item is another opportunity to practice a non-native accent.  In this case, slovenian with a german interviewer.  I suggest using it for a comprehension – cum – warm-up before a debate with a group of upper-intermediate to advanced students.  There is an ‘Occupy’ comprehension questions sheet here if you want it.
